As the owner of a rental property, you want to have good tenants who will care for the property at least as well as you do. So, what are some things you can do to improve the safety and security of your rental property to set a good example?

To improve the safety of your rental property, you might take a walk around the property and look for specific potential safety hazards. Are stairs and walkways clear of debris or obstructions? Lawn care equipment and other stored items can make it difficult to traverse these areas. Are sidewalks in good repair? Could you install lights at the edges of the stairs?

Security is also critical. Are security locks in place on all windows and doors? Can you install motion detector security lights at each unit’s entrance? Are your tenants familiar with the neighborhood, so they can help to prevent crimes of opportunity?
